Alton and East Alton fire crews battled a blaze at the Watson House in the 600 block of Alby Street in Alton early Thursday morning. The cause is still officially unknown, but investigators believe it began under the kitchen area near the back of the structure. The home at one time was a bed and breakfast, but is currently a private home.
No one was home at the time, but someone passing by noticed the smoke and flames and called 911 around 11:30pm Wednesday. Alton Fire Chief Bernie Sebold says the floor of the kitchen collapsed, and most of the damage was limited to the rear of the home and believes it can all be repaired. The Watson House dates back to 1879.
