Over a quarter mile of two inch water main is to be replaced with eight-inch main as part of a project now underway for customers of Illinois American Water in two areas of Alton and Godfrey. The projects are on Myrtle Street form Mitchell Street to Sanbourne Street in Alton, as well as on Sunset Court from Sunset Drive in Godfrey.
The main replacement program focuses on replacing mains where leaks occur, corrosion has caused damage or the size of the pipe isn’t sufficient. It's the age of the pipes coupled with corrosion and sediment accumulation over the years makes the replacements necessary, according to company spokesman Karen Cotton.
The projects are being announced in conjunction with National Drinking Water Week. She says the plan is to ensure that local water quality and service continues to be as good as or better than local, state and federal quality standards.
