A local non-profit group, founded in honor of a one-time cancer patient, hopes to bring a little comfort and joy to people currently battling the disease. The Power of the Giraffe was founded in honor of Carol Friedrich Alcorn, a Riverbend resident who battled cancer for seven years before passing away last November.
Her husband, Dale Alcorn, is founder of the group, and tells The Big Z they picked the giraffe as their mascot because that was Carol’s favorite animal. He says it was decided they wanted to honor her memory by helping people going through cancer treatment:

The group raises money to prepare care baskets of lotions, lip balm, lemon drops, blankets and other goodies a person with cancer might appreciate. A 5K Run and 1-mile Fun Walk is coming up on Saturday April 23 at Riverfront Park in Alton to support their mission. To learn more about the run, go to www.racesonline.com/events/giraffe-run
