An overflow crowd packed Alton City Council Chambers Wednesday night to witness the swearing-in of Brant Walker as the city's new mayor.  Walker beat Mayor Tom Hoechst by 74 votes in the April election.  Before leaving office, Hoechst thanked his family and friends for their support over 16 years of service as an alderman, county board member, and finally as Mayor.

He then noted the challenges of serving as mayor.

Walker was sworn in after the city clerk, treasurer and aldermen.  He also addressed the crowd.

Walker comments

Walker made a handful of appointments, including the naming of a new police chief.  Jake Simmons is a 21 year veteran of the force, moving up from the rank of Lieutenant.  Phil Roggio will not be re-appointed as the Director of Development and Housing, however a resolution was introduced that would keep him on as a consultant for 90 days.  His replacement was not named.
