About a thousand red-jacketed Illinois AmeriCorps volunteers re-dedicated themselves to service Thursday in front of the Lincoln statue outside the state Capitol in Springfield. The pledge followed a march up Capitol Avenue as part of National Service Recognition Day activities in Springfield.

The volunteers, mostly young adults but also some senior citizens, will mainly be mentoring young people. “Something like this will be used as a motivation. Other people will see what other people are doing, and they’ll get engaged,” said Serve Illinois Commission member Rev. Fred Nettles, adding the program should inspire others to give back.
