Monday is Memorial Day, but preparations for one of the more spectacular visual sights will begin tomorrow. The "Avenue of Flags" runs along Homer Adams Parkway by the Upper Alton Cemetery. About 150 flags will line the roadway, and small flags will be placed on the graves of all of the veterans buried in the cemetery. Organizers are looking for help placing those smaller flags.
Nancy Schwendeman says a number of high school students have given her a tentative commitment to help, as well as some scout troops. She says school-aged volunteers will be touched by their donation of time.
Schwendeman also says this year will be special because there will be an additional ceremony at the monument in the cemetery at noon. For more information, to make a donation or to volunteer you can contact Nancy by calling 463-0563 or 973-9368.
