The Jersey County Victorian Festival will return in 2013, after the remnants of a hurricane moving through the Midwest forced organizers to cancel the event last year. Organizers say approval of a $2,500 grant from the Jersey County Board has helped them move forward, and is now waiting to hear from the City of Jerseyville if a similar request will be approved.
The Victorian Festival typically draws several thousand people to Jerseyville during its run, and features Civil War reinactments, crafters, food and music. Victorian Festival Director Brenda Nolan says many of those involved in the festival have encouraged her to continue.
At the time of last year's cancellation, Nolan had said she was not pleased with the decrease in funding for the event from the city of Jerseyville from $3,000 last year, to $1,000 this year. She stressed the city was not to blame for the cancellation, but was not pleased with the funding cut. It costs about $20,000 to put on the event, and about $8,000 is dedicated to advertising.
