The Illinois Veterans’ History Project is looking for a few good stories. The project, part of the Illinois State Library, was created in 2005 to collect the stories of veterans and their loved ones. The state librarian, Secretary of State Jesse White, says 6,000 names and stories are in the database.

“It is so important,” says library director Anne Craig. “It gives us a perspective on the struggles that these men and women have endured during their time in their military careers, and their families – what their families went through.” Many veterans, including ex-paratrooper White, are reluctant to brag, though. White does admit there is a word for those who share the special bond of having served: “It’s called family. It’s all good.”
