After 154 years in Alton, the sisters at the Ursuline Queen of Peace infirmary and adjoining convent will be moving out in 2014. The 35 sisters now living in the infirmary and convent were notified earlier this week of the decision made at a province meeting held last weekend in St. Louis. The process of transitioning the sisters to other locations could take six months to a year.
The consensus followed an 18-month study that indicated the financial resources were not available to continue to provide quality health care at their own Ursuline facility. Sr. Diane Fulgenzi, OSU, provincial leader of the Ursuline Sisters of the Central Province, says even though they are planning to move the sisters out, the hope is to maintain a presence in Alton. This decision means that alternate living arrangements also will be sought for the sisters who live in the Ursuline Convent adjoining Queen of Peace. Ursuline officials did not indicate in a statement released to Z-1570 News what would become of the property on Danforth Street in Alton once the sisters move out.
