The Sierra Club and Alton Main Street are getting set for the second annual Urban Farm Tour one week from today. The event is set for Sunday, June 9th, from 5-7pm. Local farms on the tour include Rosa Avenue, Alton Middle School, the Discovery Garden, La Vista Community Supported Garden, the Whittman Farm, L.B. Jay's Jams, and Dry Street's tiered front yard garden. The chicken coops on the tour include the Breen and Nelson Coops and Chickens for Alton Coops.
The Sierra Club's Christine Favilla says the tour will now only include farms in the Riverbend.
She says this is an opportunity for neighbors to meet each other and see firsthand how others are transforming their yards from energy intensive lawns to something more sustainable and edible. Community Supported Gardens will be on the tour too. It is a self-guided tour, where “tourists” plan where they want to drive or bike to and visit as many sites as possible in that zone, allowing participants to view a variety of vegetables, herbs, flowers, fruit, and chickens.
