There has been a recent uptick in vehicle burglaries in and around Alton. While the hole-punch method of breaking into vehicles was popular for a while last year, it has apparently given way to a number of smash and grabs in recent weeks. One in particular at Piasa Park targeted a bicyclist that may have left valuables in plain sight.
Alton Police Chief David Hayes says by keeping valuables out of sight, you can often send a potential thief on to the next car
There have also been recent burglaries in residential areas close to busy roads that lead out of town, further reinforcing the theory that at least some of the criminals are from out-of-town. Hayes says no arrests have been made yet.
