Authorities in Alton are investigating two suspicious fires in the city since last evening. Both fires took place at vacant properties and there were no injuries. Local investigators have been called in to take a look at the evidence left behind to determine if the fires were set on purpose.
The Alton Fire Department first responded to a fire at a home in the 2300 block of Sunset last evening after 8:00. The building is reported to be a total loss. Then, Alton Deputy Fire Chief Mark Harris tells The Big Z just after 1:00am today, Alton fire crews were called out to a fire at another unoccupied property, this time in the 2700 block of Residence.

The East Alton Fire Department assisted in the response for the second fire, but was back at their station by 4:00am. Harris says local investigators include members of the fire and police departments. If need be, he says they may call in the state fire marshal’s office.
