The annual Illinois Police Officers Memorial Ceremony was held at the police memorial statue Thursday at the Capitol. “Today’s ceremony is a special day for law enforcement across Illinois because it reminds us that saving and protecting lives is a calling that most are not willing to answer,” said Hiram Grau, director of the Illinois State Police. This year Illinois State Trooper Kyle Deatherage was honored.

Deatherage was killed in the line of duty in Nov of 2012. Adam McMillen, the brother to an officer who lost his life in 2007, spoke to the surviving members of the Deatherage family. “All of us came from very different backgrounds, but we each saw our lives quickly change and we now find ourselves together on this shared journey,” McMillen said.
