Scammers come in all shapes and sizes and local authorities say two men from Hannibal, Missouri, allegedly agreed to cut down a tree but failed to deliver on their signed promise. The Madison County State's Attorney's Office filed charges against 38 year old Jason Lee Pipkin and 30 year old Ronnie D. Wasson for aggravated home repair fraud and theft over $500.
The men allegedly were paid more than $10,000 by an 89 year old woman for tree work, and even signed paperwork agreeing to cut down the tree, and then failed to finish the job. The woman paid the men over a period between March 21 and April 9, but then told a friend she felt uncomfortable about the situation. The friend then called police. Warrants have been issued for their arrest and they are believed to have been working in the Alton area for several weeks. The men say they work for Wasson's Tree Service, and have been going door to door, handing out business cards. They did attempt to obtain a business license through the city of Alton, but were rejected due to concerns with city codes. The men allegedly continued to solicit business after failing to obtain the license.
