In just a few days, Alton residents will begin using their new trash cans. The city's new automated trash pick-up is set to begin April 2, and the cans -- or carts, as Allied Waste calls them -- are now in the possession of most users. The city approved the new deal in October with Allied Waste to make the switch, and starting Monday, the new 95-gallon cans will be pressed into service.
Those will be emptied once each week, and recyclables will be picked up every other week. Allied's Manager of Business Development, Susan Piazza says you should remember the position the carts were originally placed in when they were delivered.
Some elderly or physically challenged residents may request a smaller, 65-gallon, trash can, and those wanting an additional can will pay $18 more per year. She asks that everyone try the 95-gallon cart for a couple months before requesting the smaller one.
