Starting Monday, Alton residents will begin receiving their new trash cans, or carts, as the company in charge calls them. The city's new automated trash pick-up is set to begin the week of April 2, but cans will start showing up around town March 19. The city council approved a new deal in October with Allied Waste to provide about 25-thousand 95-gallon containers to Alton residents.
Those will be emptied once each week, and recyclables will be picked up every other week. Allied's Manager of Business Development, Susan Piazza says while the switchover may seem overwhelming, they have done this before and are comfortable with their procedures.
She says when you first get your new cart, remember the position it is placed in, as that is the way you will need to set the carts out on your pick-up day. She says yard waste will also be collected on a weekly basis April through November.
