Work on area railroad crossings will begin this week, as IDOT is continuing work in preparation for the High Speed Rail upgrade. Crossings from Alton to Chicago will undergo upgrades that will allow for the trains to pick up the pace. The upgrades will primarily affect the crossings in Godfrey and Alton, and railroad employees began placing equipment over the weekend.
Union Pacific Railroad spokesman Mark Davis says his company is one of many collaborating on this project.
The crossings in Godfrey will begin closing this week, and will involve all four crossings at Alby Street, Tolle Lane, Pearl Street and Bethany Lane, although not all will be closed at the same time. The Washington Avenue/Humbert Road crossing in Alton will also be impacted this week. Some closures will last a few days, others could last a few weeks.
