The annual Toys of Tots campaign is history, and more than 5,000 local children will have toys for Christmas thanks to the donations of numerous River Bend residents and organizations. The toy giveaway took place yesterday at the Wood River VFW with parents and families taking advantage of the generosity of the Marine Corp Reserve.
Around 5,500 children in Madison County were registered for the giveaway this season. Kids ages birth to 12 were assisted this year with toys of all kinds, helping out families that were struggling to made ends meet. The Toys for Tots campaign locally has been organized by Glenn and Debbie Heimer since 2001, with dozens of other volunteers working the event up to and during distribution. In St. Clair County, more than 8-thousand children had signed up for toys this Christmas.
