One local township has gotten its wish to opt out of the expanded America’s Central Port District. Alton, Godfrey, Wood River and parts of Jersey County are among local townships that are a part of the port district, but Quarry Township is now out, following Governor Bruce Rauner’s signature on legislation to make it so.

Quarry Township Supervisor Bob Smith has said they want out due to several concerns, including having control of the riverfront and the ability of the port district to levy taxes. The executive director has said in previous interviews with The Big Z the district has never levied taxes, and does not anticipate that changing.
