One person was killed in a tornado that struck south of the Rockford area in northern Illinois last evening. The victim was killed in a home in Fairdale, which is about 25 miles south of Rockford in DeKalb County. Seven other people in the town were injured.
Earlier in the evening, a tornado ripped through the towns of Rochelle and Ashton, also south of Rockford. Fourteen people had to be freed from the rubble of Grubsteakers restaurant in Rochelle, but none were seriously injured. Illinois Governor Bruce Rauner activated the State Incident Response Center so personnel and equipment could be quickly deployed if local emergency responders needed help.
