Three people were taken to local hospitals yesterday at Menasha Packaging in Edwardsville after they became ill from an odor inside a trailer. The incident took place around 9:15am Thursday at the warehouse located on Gateway Commerce Center Drive, just off Highway 255.
A company statement says the odor originated from inside a trailer that was being partially unloaded at the warehouse. The odor was coming from a chemical that had been applied on other items in the trailer that were being delivered to another company. There were no chemical spills or contamination at the warehouse, although it was evacuated and a Madison County HAZMAT team was called in as a precaution. Firefighters from Mitchell, Edwardsville, Glen Carbon and South Roxana responded to the scene along with a number of ambulances. The building was ventilated and cleared for employees to return to work around 11:30am Thursday. The company says one person remains in the hospital for treatment, while two others have already been sent home.
