A new campaign from the Illinois Emergency Management Agency urges families to "Text First, Talk Second" when disaster strikes. IEMA Spokesman Patti Thompson says it's really important to have a communication plan in place so family members know how to get ahold of each other in an emergency.

Thompson says that initial text should be short and simple, like "are you ok" or "I'm ok". As phone congestion clears up, you can call family members to relay more information.
