An Edwardsville area teen and her infant son have been located in West Virginia and are safe. 13-year-old Katherine Derleth and her son Christopher were found this (Saturday) afternoon by U.S. Marshals at a campsite in Kanawha County. The suspect in the kidnapping, 39-year-old Christopher M. Derleth was taken into custody.
The trio had been the subject of a nationwide AMBER Alert since Monday, a day after they were reported missing from the town of Carpenter, which is north of Edwardsville. The elder Derleth, who was identified as the teenager’s stepfather, was charged with kidnapping in Madison County on Monday and police released new photos and asked for additional help from the public again on Thursday. The infant was just two weeks’ old, and his 13-year-old mother delivered him via C-section. Authorities said Thursday they were concerned for their well-being after the delivery, and said Katherine also suffered from a heart condition. Media reports out of Charleston, WV, indicated authorities were able to track down the suspect after he used a credit card and was seen on video surveillance.
