Members of the Alton Education Association have soundly defeated a contract offer from the school district. Union members voted yesterday afternoon, with more than half casting a ballot and about 98-percent voting against the offer from the school district. Contract talks stalled last week between the Alton School District and the Alton Education Association, with the sticking point, apparently the salary re-opener in the current contract.
Both sides have been meeting with a federal mediator, but to no avail. The AEA represents nearly 800 teachers and other staff, and union President Edie Banks says they hope to sit down again with the district to try to move toward middle ground. There are no more talks scheduled at his time between the two parties, but neither side is talking about a possible strike at this point.
