The Madison County Treasurer's Office mails out 130,000 tax bills each year. Of those, a small portion do not get paid, and are up for sale in February of the following year. This year's tax sale was held earlier this week, and resulted in a weighted average interest rate of 3.7% - the third year in a row interest rates have checked in below 4%.
Treasurer Kurt Prenzler says that sure beats the 18% that was the norm under the administration of disgraced former Treasurer Fred Bathon from 2007 and 2008.
