The owners of the power plant that sits along the Berm Highway in East Alton are appealing their tax bill. One of the biggest chunks of the taxes goes to the Alton School District, so the district is gearing up for a process they hope can be settled without the drama that played out in a neighboring community last year.
The Wood River Refinery appealed its tax burden last year, and the Roxana School District would have been on the hook for millions of dollars, had an agreement not been brokered. Alton School District Finance Director Chris Norman tells The Big Z the numbers in play here are smaller, and hopes for a quick and painless resolution.

The Dynegy power plant and its owners, Illinova and Dynegy Midwest Generation, paid over $1.4-million in taxes last year, of which the Alton School District received nearly $752,000.
