With school out most places for the summer, the Illinois Department of Public Health is reminding about swimming safety this summer. Drowning is the leading cause of death for children ages one to four.

State Environmental Health Engineer Justin DeWitt says parents need to be very vigilant when their kids are around water, especially in backyard pools where the majority of drownings occur.

DeWitt comments

Another concern is bacteria in the water. DeWitt says that’s why it’s important to make sure babies and toddlers wear a swim diaper and you don’t swim when you have diarrhea.
