An alert neighbor helped thwart an assault on a woman in Edwardsville Monday night, and also helped police capture three suspects in the case. Police responded to the report of gunfire on Devon Court and discovered a 52-year-old female who had been beaten in an attempted armed carjacking.
The gunfire originated from a neighbor who witnessed the incident and fired his gun into the air several times and the suspects fled the scene. No one was struck by the gunfire and he will not be charged. The victim says a male suspect pulled a gun on her and grabbed her keys, but fled the scene when the shots were fired. Edwardsville police arrested a male and female in a car that had been reported stolen out of St. Louis on Sunday. Another male was arrested on foot near the Valley View Cemetery without incident. The Madison County State’s Attorney has charged 17 year olds Lorenzo Waller, Martece Shumpert and Quan Willis, all of Bellefontaine Neighbors, with aggravated vehicular hijacking, armed robbery, aggravated unlawful use of weapons and aggravated battery. All three are being held in the Madison County Detention Home and are charged as adults.
