Some Alton Middle School students have been successfully gardening in a plot of land behind the Annex Building for a few years. Soon, they may be tending to a handful of chickens as well. Teaching vegetable gardening and the benefits of growing your own food has been a project of Science teacher Sig Utgaard for the past several years, and tells The Big Z this next step is coming soon.

He says this will be an example of an integrated whole system, showing the benefits of having small livestock cohabiting the garden. Utgaard says the chickens should provide bug control, manure to fertilize the garden, and provide eggs.
