The Alton School District and Edwardsville School District each had one of their students recognized last month as recipients of the monthly "Do the Right Thing of Greater St. Louis" awards. Eleven year old Elanor "Ella" Chapman-Baker of Alton and 2-and-half year old Shane Stawar of Edwardsville were awarded for helping others.
Chapman-Baker, who attends Alton Middle School, asked for money for her birthday instead of presents, so that she could donate it to her classes fund for the 2011 Shop with a Cop program. In total she donated $100 or one-fifth of the class' total donation.
Stawar helped save his grandmother's life by climbing onto a couch to get the phone for her after she had fallen and broken her hip. After getting her the phone, he continued to help her by propping her head up with a toy sofa until paramedics arrived.
The Do the Right Thing of Greater St. Louis has elicited more than 25,000 nominations since it was established in 1995.
