A juvenile student at Alton High School could face disciplinary action following an incident this week that resulted in authorities briefly locking down the school. Another student apparently witnessed what appeared to be a weapon at the end of the school day on Tuesday, then Wednesday students were confined to their classrooms for part of the day as police searched for the suspect and the mysterious item.
School officials say they were notified by a student late in the school day on Tuesday about the possible weapon viewed inside another students book bag in the boys locker room. The Madison County Sheriff's Department was notified, and yesterday, police and school officials continued the investigation and were able to determine the identity of the student and located what was described as a toy gun at the students home in Alton. Assistant Superintendent Kristie Baumgartner tells Z-1570 News they decided to send out a phone message to all parents yesterday to make sure they had the latest information:
Authorities determined there was no threat by the student and no intent to harm anyone. The Madison County State's Attorney is reviewing the case for possible charges. Baumgartner would not comment on any disciplinary action the student might face.
