Members of the union representing support staff in the Southwestern School District are still working without a new contract and are headed back to negotiations with the district. The Southwestern ESP Association rejected the most recent contract offer from the district and will sit down again with a federal mediator.
The union represents about 60 full and part-time non-teaching school staff that work as bus drivers, teacher aides, school secretaries, custodians and lunchroom workers. The most recent contract expired in June. The two sides last meet with the federal mediator on August 24, and the union voted this Monday against the offer. A second session with the mediator has been requested, and the union says if no progress is made, it will take a vote on whether to file an intent to strike notice. The union says the sticking point remains salary.
