Nearly 2,100 employees at the Granite City Works location of U.S. Steel will be idled, after the parent company handed out notices this morning. United States Steel Corporation will consolidate its North-American Flat-Rolled operations as part of an on-going adjustment of steelmaking operations throughout North America.
Granite City Mayor Ed Hagnaur says the news comes as a shock.

He says that with the price of fuel being down and drilling slowing down, so had the plant’s orders for tubular steel. The company cites reduced steel prices, unfair trade, imports and fluctuating oil prices as having an impact on the business. These notices are separate from the notices related to the permanent shutdown of Granite City Works’ coke making facility, according to a statement from U.S. Steel.
