An Illinois State trooper says he didn't see a man running in the road before he hit and killed him on Route 159 in Swansea. Officials say 46 year old James Gaskill, of Monmouth, darted into the lane as the officer was driving by early yesterday morning, but it was too late for the officer to avoid hitting him. Gaskill had apparently been helping a stranded driver.
Gaskill, a driver for a carnival company, died of trauma to the neck and chest. The officer's name hasn’t been released but he remains on active duty while an investigation is underway.
