A special prosecutor from the state Attorney General's office will investigate how a southern Illinois police chief lost his gun.  The weapon was reportedly stolen from Carbondale police chief Jody O'Guinn's car in June 2011, and was used three months later in the murder of Deaunta Spencer of Carbondale.  The man accused of supplying the gun and the killer are both now in prison.

Prosecutors asked for the special prosecutor to avoid any conflict of interest in determining just how the gun was stolen.  No charges have been filed in the gun theft portion of the case.  O'Guinn was deputy police chief of Alton before taking the job in Carbondale in 2009.
