The holiday weeks are no time to rest if you are in the tourism industry, and Illinois’ historic sites are no exception. The Old State Capitol is hosting Santa Claus, with crafts and kids’ games of the 19th Century. The Dana-Thomas House in Springfield and David Davis Mansion in Bloomington will have decorations, among many other things to see and do.
It is happening in spite of a difficult time for state finances. “We do a lot with public-private partnerships, where we are able to partner up with people in the community and corporate sponsors to help us be able to provide everything that the state has provided in years past,” says Amy Martin, director of the Illinois Historic Preservation Agency. “Plus, just the help of the volunteers: with the sheer volunteer numbers that we have here in Springfield alone, we have over 500 volunteers that volunteer at the Springfield sites.”
