Drivers are starting to hit the road for the holidays but they won’t be alone. Beginning today, Illinois State Police troopers are patrolling state roadways for 24-hours straight. They’ll be conducting road side safety checks, and keeping an eye out for people who are speeding, driving drunk, texting, or not wearing seat belts in honor of a fallen co-worker.
They’re calling the boosted enforcement “Operation Kyle” in honor of fallen trooper Kyle Deatherage of Madison County. He was hit and killed by a semi while he was conducting a traffic stop on I-55 north of Litchfield one year ago today. The stepped up patrols began at midnight.
