Safety belts are estimated to save 16,000 lives a year according to recent statistics. In an effort to increase that number, the Illinois State Police will be conducting Occupant Restraint Enforcement Patrols during the month of December in Madison County.
OREP allows the Illinois State Police to target an area and focus additional patrols on traffic violation and other compliance issues according to ISP Trooper Calvin Dye Jr. He says compliance rates have gone up in recent years

In addition to seat belt enforcement, Dye says law enforcement will also be checking compliance for child safety seats during December. The added patrols are funded through the Illinois Department of Transportation Division of Traffic Safety.
