Money from a new two-dollar surcharge on license plate renewals is starting to reach state parks. The new charge began this year as a part of the "DNR Sustainability Bill," which was passed by the General Assembly. It will provide a source of funding for parks for upkeep and other issues.
The new revenue will also help the Illinois Department of Natural Resources begin to pay down its 750-million dollar maintenance backlog. From the surcharge, the DNR is expected to receive between 18-million and 22-million dollars annually.
