Illinois' budget impasse has forced Alton's Senior Services Plus to cut services and staff, according to the agency's executive director. At the end of January, there will be fewer employees, the complete elimination of their transportation program, and a reduction of the number of Meals on Wheels deliveries.
SSP Executive Director Jonathan Becker tells The Big Z the Meals on Wheels cuts amount to a 40% reduction in the number of seniors receiving meals.

The transportation program cuts, according to Becker, may mean some seniors will have to skip doctors appointments if they cannot afford cab fare. He says Illinois currently owes SSP over $1.5-million.
