Interstate highways in Illinois could see an increase in the speed limit. Republican State Sen. Jim Oberweis sponsored a bill to raise the speed limit from 65 to 70, saying it will bring Illinois in line with other states.  “Thirty-four states currently have laws that allow travel on interstate highways at 70 mph or higher. This would bring Illinois to 70, from the current limit of 65,” Oberweis said.

Under the bill, the point at which speeding becomes a misdemeanor would remain at 96 mph.  The counties of Cook, DuPage, Kane, Lake, McHenry, and Will could opt out of the increase, if it becomes law.  S.B. 2356 passed the Senate 41-6, and is under consideration in the Illinois House.
