If you’re inclined to listen carefully to everything Illinois House Speaker Mike Madigan (D-Chicago. pictured) says, it’s interesting to note that during a session with reporters Wednesday, he found several opportunities to mention that Gov. Pat Quinn and House Minority Leader Tom Cross (R-Oswego) have been meeting to discuss a possible pension solution.

The General Assembly meets today, as the governor has ordered a way out of the state’s pension funding crisis. A bill which has passed the Senate addresses only two of the five pension systems. Madigan reminded reporters that he had given Cross sponsorship of a more wide-ranging solution, but that bill was never called. Madigan says lawmakers could make progress if only they could put aside political concerns. Can they do that? “This is America,” Madigan noted.
