Fires started by space heaters, furnaces, and other sources of heat are the second leading cause of house fires this time of year, second only to cooking. When you turn on your heat for the first time, fire safety experts hope you have been performing yearly maintenance on your furnace. They also ask you be extremely cautious if using a space heater.
Godfrey Fire Protection District Chief Bernie Eric Kambarian tells The Big Z you should leave at least two feet between a space heater and any flammable item like clothes, blankets or paper, and avoid using the space heater overnight.
