It’s time for the Soap Box Derby in East Alton.  The race and corresponding festival is entering its third decade this year.  There are about 25 vendors registered, including more crafters this year.  It is always held the weekend after Labor Day, giving area youths a chance to race in a soapbox car down Berkshire Hill.

Crowds have been good in recent years, according to Holly Cheatham, Recreational Programmer for East Alton Park and Recreation.  But with today’s forecast being iffy, she says there is a backup plan in place.

It is for fun only, and the cars are provided.  Participants must be at least 7 years old, 4ft to 4ft 9 inches and must weight between 55-90 pounds, but she says if your child is close to these parameters, come down and they will see if they fit in the cars.  They must be able to pass a safety check, fit comfortable in the car, operate the brakes and handle the steering of the car.  Racing starts at noon.
