A fire Monday morning damaged part the building that houses Baze Construction in the 2800 block of Brown Street in Alton, along with two upstairs apartments. The fire chief credits a working smoke alarm for alerting a resident of one of the apartments who was able to escape without injury and call 9-1-1.
Alton Fire Chief Bernie Sebold tells The Big Z when crews arrived just before 5:00am Monday they observed fire coming from the first floor window of the office and activated the Box Alarm System which called him at home, the deputy fire chief and the East Alton Fire Department. Sebold says the quick call helped firefighters save most of the building:

Sebold says their investigation points to the cause as old wiring above a drop ceiling that overheated and caused the fire. Damage is estimated at around $10,000 mainly due to smoke, but Sebold believes the building is repairable.
