The Illinois House began its investigation of State Rep. Derrick Smith (D-Chicago) Tuesday, but it will be a while before a verdict is rendered. A panel of six lawmakers will determine whether there’s enough evidence to recommend disciplinary action to the next panel, composed of twelve lawmakers. State Rep. Elaine Nekritz (D-Northbrook) says that panel will forward its recommendation to the full House.

“The purpose of this committee is not to discipline Rep. Smith,” she says. “We are, in fact, only to inquire into the underlying facts as thoroughly as possible, and determine whether disciplinary charges are in fact warranted.” The panel met for about twenty minutes, and should convene again in two weeks. Nekritz says it’s unclear what the U.S. Attorney will make available to the panel as such information could interfere with the criminal proceeding.
