In what has become a mini-trend of sorts, the Alton City Council has gone against a Plan Commission recommendation that will allow a local businessman to pursue a Midtown property. Alton Area Towing has been rehabbing a former auto repair shop on 7th Street that had been without a business tenant long enough its ability to operate as such had apparently expired.
That is because the city's zoning master plan is trying to return residential neighborhoods to completely residential uses, according to Alton Corporation Counselor Jim Schrempf.

The council overrode the Plan Commission recommendation to deny a text amendment adding motor vehicle towing dispatch centers to the R-2 zoning district. The owner of the towing company will go back in front of the Plan Commission seeking a Special Use Permit on February 2.
