Is the replacement of the three longest-serving trustees on the SIU board a political move? It depends on who you ask. SIU President Glen Poshard has made statements in the past claiming Governor Pat Quinn would get rid of the trustees that would not reappoint Roger Herrin as Chairman of the Board. A statement by the Quinn administration denies the accusation. Gone from the board are Ed Hightower, John Simmons and Mark Hinrichs.
Hightower is the Superintendent of the Edwardsville School District, and longest-serving member of the board he will be leaving. Simmons of Godfrey heads up one of the most powerful law firms in Madison County. Hinrichs is head of a company that builds off-campus student housing facilities. They are being replaced by Sandra Cook of Collinsville, retired USMC; Lee Milner of Springfield, manager of public affairs for the Mississippi Valley Regional Blood Center; and Melvin Terrell of Chicago, a life-long educator.
