An investigation has been opened on the SIU-Carbondale campus following allegations of racial slurs being directed toward black students during a recent political forum. A student who claims she was one of the targets of the comments recently posted a video on Facebook claiming student supporters of Donald Trump were responsible for the language.
The university has opened an official investigation into the allegations following a formal complaint through the Office of Students Rights and Responsibilities and the Office of Diversity and Equity. The student in the video claims other students at the forum, who said they supported Donald Trump, used the “N” word against her, put down the Black Lives Matter group, and told her to “go back to Africa.” The interim Chancellor of SIU issued a statement reminding that students at SIU Carbondale have a right to free speech but also a responsibility to use it wisely and respectfully. The video has been shared more than 53-hundred times and viewed more than 150-thousand times in the week since it was posted.
