A 22-year-old East Alton man is being treated for non life-threatening injuries in St. Louis after being shot by a Wood River Police officer Friday morning. Matthew J. Lane (pictured), of the 3000 block of Smith Street, will likely be taken straight to jail after discharge from the hospital. He is charged with attempted first degree murder and offenses relating to a motor vehicle.

Lane was allegedly driving a stolen Chevy Cobalt around 10am Friday morning, when a 20-year veteran of the Wood River Police Department shot him. The officer says he felt his life was in danger as Lane allegedly drove in his direction. The officer shot Lane through the windshield of the car, as he perceived a threat great enough to pull his weapon, according to Captain Jim Morrisey of the Illinois State Police

Morrisey comments

Morrisey says his office will conduct an investigation and turn its findings over to the States Attorney's office.
